Reality check
If your style incorporates defence against weapons – ask a training partner to attack you from different angles with a rolled up newspaper. This is a great training drill and gives you an understanding of what gaps, if any are in your weapon defence skills. Remember that even a five year old with a knife is dangerous.

If the 5 year old with a knife attacks, make sure to tease the child first. Then, after they start crying, you can administer a series of deadly blows.
When the mother of the child complains that you have brutally beaten their 5 yr old child, you can explain that you are a martial arts student and it was a fair fight.
This was a joke!
I have studied 3 different martial arts styles for a few years each. When I was studying Jiu Jitsu, I was surprised at the deadly nature of so many moves.
The main lesson I learned from my teachers of that style (and some others) is that the most important tool we have is our brains -- THINK before you use a martial art!
Basic disarming techniques, which don't harm your opponent, are quite often the most useful things in modern society.
I agree wholeheartedly about thinking before using any martial technique. Re: disarms - If you can disarm somebody without harm to yourself (primarily) and the other person (secondary)- great. Unfortunately this is a difficult proposition if the the attack has intent and the attacker is using a variable line of attack.
